Sorry not sorry to disappoint ladies, but the answer is to just do it! The backstory on why I wanted to make this a post is because there are people out here that think otherwise! Last year I collaborated with Catherines for a fall outfit post and everything went great. I make it a point to engage with commenters when brands repost my photos on their social media platforms. Under one of those photos, someone commented that I should not have tucked the shirt into my pants since I have a larger tummy. Shamika circa 5 years ago may have felt some type of way about it, but Mika 2018 and Mika 2019 knows better.
Nevertheless I remember the comment today because I intentionally tuck more often than choosing not too! Also I have a habit of not forgetting when people “try it”. Anyways when I read the comment, I didn’t read it as “ Shamika should not tuck shirts in because she has a belly.” I read it as “I (the person that made the comment) am not confident enough to do what Shamika did, and it’s bugging me. So I’m going to project my lack of audacity to wear what I want onto her and the hundreds of other commenters that loved the photo.”
When stuff like this happens it’s never really about you. That person sees something in you that they wish they had, or haven’t the courage to do.
You see I never use to tuck my shirts and other tops in my jeans for the very same reason. It’s been instilled in us by society and media that if a belly isn’t flat, it has to be hidden and “fixed”, and I call BS as I share with you how I tuck!
Favorite Ways to Tuck Shirts with a Big Belly
My favorite tuck is a full tuck into some high waisted skinny jeans. I blouse my shirt a little for a relaxed look.
I also love to half tuck button up shirts by tucking everything in except one front panel of the top. If the front of the top doesn’t have two panels I tuck one side and let the shirt gradually drape over my belt on the untucked side.
I feel like fun belts are gonna have a real moment this fall. If your pants have belt loops wear belts with interesting embellishments and/ or buckles. I just recently nabbed this Western Double Buckle belt from Eloquii for the fall. (See more fancy belts for fall inspiration tap here.) This adds some interest to your waistline and brings more attention to that area.
So there! That’s my tea on how to tuck shirts with a big belly! Just do it and forget the rest!
