This is a short and sweet outdoor patio bench makeover, but first the backstory. If you have a DIYers mind then you’ve often found yourself mentally dissecting things you see online or in stores. That’s how this all started. I tweeted about the fact that I came across a cute bench with storage my DIYer way of thinking completely deduced this bench to nothing but a wood box wrapped in foam and fabric.
Me: This is a cute bench.

Also DIYer me: This is a wood box, wrapped with foam and fabric on legs. I can do that…should I? pic.twitter.com/qAB0gf5BmM
Ironically a few hours later I swung in by one of my local Goodwill’s on a whim and guess what I found…a freaking bench y’all! It wasn’t the storage bench I deconstructed on Twitter, but a bench nonetheless. I’d seen this bench in places like Walmart, Lowe’s, and Home Depot and knew they were all around $100-130. So at $25 I had to thrift it.

DIY Outdoor Bench Makeover
Supplies
(linked below)
2 Cans of Rustoleum Spray Paint (Color: Sand) ($5 Each)
1 Bench Cushion ( about $30 dollars)
1 Better Home and Garden Outdoor Pillow ($12)
2 Monstera Leaf Pillows ($5 Each)
I hosed down the whole bench and scrubbed it to remove any dirt and let it dry. Just before I spray painted it I wiped it down with a dry cloth again (the pollen has been intense here in Tally). I was able to spray all but the part that would be covered by cushions. Maybe I’ll go back and spray that part, but I didn’t want to go back to the store again that day. This spray paint did such a good job of covering up the original brown color and I can’t believe how it completely brought life to this outdoor bench.
Once it dried I added a beige bench cushion (sold out online here are more cushions under $40) and three outdoor pillows. Outdoor furniture cushions can be pretty pricey. So make sure you’re prepared for that expense before you jump to thrift outdoor furniture that does not come with cushions.
Thankfully the throw pillows and cushion I picked out were affordable. The supplies and the bench totalled to less than the price of a brand new bench and cushions.

I’m so happy with how it turned out and can’t wait to see what my next thrifted decor find will be. It’s the perfect addition to my expanding outdoor patio space.
